TWENTY-THREE
âSo what did we learn from that?â Daniel said as we came out of the building and started to walk back toward the center of town. âNot much, did we?â
âOnly confirmation of what we had suspected,â I said. âHe wouldnât have robbed a friendâs house. He wouldnât have shot anybody. He probably didnât need money.â
âWe now know he was planning to go to a theater,â Daniel said. âToo bad itâs Sunday. Theyâll all be closed. Weâll have to come back again when they are operating.â
I frowned as we crossed the green. âIf he was planning to take a girl to the theater, then why did he go to the Silvertonsâ house? You donât usually take a young lady to meet your pals. And what was he doing out of town with her late at night?â
âShe may not have been entirely respectable,â Daniel said. âNot all young men have honorable intentions, you know.â
âBut if he didnât have honorable intentions, he wouldnât have been interested in driving out into the countryside, would he? Iâm sure the girl must have had a room in town.â
âYouâre not supposed to know about such things,â Daniel said.
âMe? Iâve met my fair share of prostitutes, you know. Shared a jail cell with them once.â
Daniel just shook his head.
âAnyway, it doesnât add up if he met the girl. On the other hand, if he was hoping to meet a girl and she jilted him or never turned up, he might have decided to drive out to visit a pal, just so that he didnât have to go home early and lose face with his friends.â
âPossible.â Daniel nodded. âEither way the next step is to get ourselves out to the Silverton place and find out what really happened that night. Iâd also like to hear the New Haven policeâs side of the story, but I donât know if I should speak to them, given my current circumstances.â
âI can speak to them,â I said.
Daniel snorted. âI hardly think they will divulge the key elements of their investigation to a private investigator.â
âDid you never think that I might wheedle it out of them with my feminine charms?â
âI think that highly unlikely. Weâre trained to resist feminine charms.â
âYou fell for mine,â I said with a satisfied little smile. âAt the very moment when you were supposed to be prosecuting me.â
âBe that as it may, I think it may be better if I have a quiet word with one of my fellow officers in New York. Heâll be able to find out all the details of the case for me.â
âSo how are we going to get out to the Silverton place?â I asked. âI understood it was on the road between New Haven and Bridgeport.â
âGo back to the station and see if there is a cab willing to take us that far.â
âIâm starving,â I said. âDonât police officers ever eat?â
âNot when weâre on a case,â Daniel said. âBut in deference to the weaker sex . . .â
âFine. If you can hold out, so can I.
